Hi ho hi ho it’s back to school I go: My expectations for the Event Marketing program

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have always imagined.” -Henry David Thoreau

How I got to where I am

Rewind the clock a few months back.   <<<  <<<  <<<

I certainly wasn’t “going confidently in the direction of my dreams”. In reality I was far away from that. I was stuck in a dull job that I wasn’t passionate about. My days were spent processing numbers and attempting to analyze data and stats. Numbers, numbers, numbers. Day in and day out. Sure, it was a job in the marketing field, but it just wasn’t the right side of marketing for me. As a creative-minded individual, I eventually found the job wasn’t the right fit for me. I felt like a circle being forced into a square peg. My creative side was beginning to wilt like a flower that hadn’t been watered in weeks.

After a few months of trying to convince myself that numbers and data were part of my reality and that I better start liking it, I decided to part ways with my position. I made the logical decision to put my creative side in the driver’s seat. Having completed a post-graduate certificate at Centennial College in Corporate Communications and Public Relations, I thought that Event Marketing would nicely compliment my prior education.

When making the decision to go back to school, I did a Google search on “event programs in Ontario”.  I was flooded with a whole bunch of options for schools and programs. This made my decision on where to apply extremely difficult. How can you really tell if a program is good before enrolling? There really isn’t any way of knowing, but for some reason I had a feeling in my gut that Seneca College would be the best choice for me. That, backed with research on former grads and whether they were successful in finding employment after graduation, solidified my confidence in the program and ultimately led to my enrollment in the program.

What I hope to get out of the program

I would be kidding myself  if I didn’t say the first thing I hoped for out of the program was a job, but in reality it is. I think I share this sentiment with every other student in the program.  Next to this, I hope to learn the ins and outs of the industry and how best to survive it. I expect that the program will arm me with the knowledge and experience needed to succeed in the events sector.

I look forward to all the opportunities, in and out of the classroom to build my network and broaden my understanding of the events industry. I am also excited about attending, volunteering and planning events to gain a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes.

While I’m not totally sure which sector within events I want to work in, my ultimate goal is to have a rewarding career in a field that I am passionate about. From here on in, I plan to travel boldly in the direction of my dream of working in the events industry.
